BP’s current plan to stop the six-week-old oil leak was to cut through the riser pipe in order to place a containment dome to capture most of the oil flow and send it up to a tanker on the surface. A saw blade got stuck while attempting to cut the pipe but was freed hours later by a robotic submarine.

The oil spill which has been considered the worst in American history prompted President Obama to address the future of the nation’s energy during a speech at Carnegie Mellon University.

"The catastrophe unfolding in the Gulf right now" is further evidence that "the time has come, once and for all, for this nation to fully embrace a clean energy future," the president said.. He said the catastrophe in the Gulf should prompt Americans to acknowledge that the US cannot depend only on fossil fuels

While BP struggles with another attempt to contain the oil leak, the Obama administration is coming under great public pressure to step in and take action.

The president acknowledged that he does not have enough support within Congress to get an energy bill passed immediately, but promised to press forward for passage this year for a bipartisan framework to continue with his energy plan.
